Town Centre

Rotherham Town Centre is at the heart of the borough, providing an attractive, compact location with pedestrianised shopping areas radiating from the magnificent Rotherham Minster.

Award-winning Rotherham town centre is proud to offer a wealth of shopping opportunities, particularly for those looking for something different, including a mixture of High Street favourites, small independent shops, cafe's and restaurants, a bustling indoor and outdoor market and award-winning street market.

The quality of Rotherham's shopping offer was noted by Mary Portas when she visited the town recently. Specific high praise was given to the quality of the independent shops with Mary commenting; "Some of the retailers I thought, honestly, were better than some in the heart of London."

If you’re looking to set up in Rotherham town centre, we offer a host of flexible terms and business opportunities to enhance the unique independent retail offer, with lots of help & advice available.

Town Centre Grants

Rotherham Council's Retail Investment Team are committed to providing high-quality support and guidance as well as offering a host of business opportunities. This includes potential funding for eligible niche retailers and marketing grants for new and existing businesses.

Portas Pilot Project

Rotherham was recognised as an example of best practice by Mary Portas and we have been approached by over 20 Local Authorities with whom we have shared best practice based on our increasing national profile. We were also successful in securing £100,000 as part of the Government’s Portas Pilot project.

The funding has been used to expand the existing Business Vitality Grants Scheme to positively contribute to the town's shopping experience and bring something different to the High Street. Businesses also benefit from bespoke marketing and branding training that breaks the mould of standard packages.

The introduction of such schemes has seen real results in terms of reduced shop vacancies, increased footfall and the attraction of a new type of customer.
