Former Council worker sees benefit of starting own business

After 16 years working in the public sector Brian Moran is seeing the benefits of setting up his own business – and finding the ideal location to base his business.

Brian had worked with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) and the 2010 Rotherham project, in a number of positions, including electrician, and quality assurance officer for electrical projects, until spring last year when he decided to take early retirement.

He was initially offered an opportunity with a private sector electrical contractor, however after several months and much consideration he decided to establish his own company.

And so Moran Electrical Solutions was created in December 2010, primarily to serve the educational sector which Brian had experience with from his time with RMBC. As Brian explains;

“I identified a need in the education sector for schools to have a good quality service, with a fast turnaround but at competitive prices. I am well aware that many schools have very restricted budgets, but they also need a quick service, as electrical problems may cause them to have to close a school or at least a part of it if issues can’t be remedied quickly.”

Business is now going well and Moran Electrical Solutions now work with schools primarily in the Rotherham, Sheffield and Chesterfield areas. The company has also won increasing amounts of commercial work with clients ranging from a hotel chain in the North West & London area to distribution centres across the North of the UK.

The companies’ success has meant that it has already taken on four additional electricians (three of which are also former RMBC staff) and Brian is also considering employing an apprentice electrician.

Brian is pleased with how the business is progressing so far, commenting;

“Its still early days but the business is building slowly but surely. We don’t want to run before we can walk, but so far we have had excellent feedback on our prices and quality of work, and are getting repeat business. If we can continue to make a living and enjoy it, whilst also helping out our customers, we’ll be very happy.  Brian admits it was a big decision to start the business, adding;

“It was daunting to start with, organising the business plus the insurance, business registration, book keeping etc. The list was endless!  In addition there was the worry of whether the business would succeed. Add to this the disruption caused by the snow in December, Christmas and New Year breaks ... it was tough. However we’re past all that now and if the business continues to expand at the present rate I feel very confident for our prospects.”

Brian believes a key element in the company’s early success has been the decision to locate the business at the Fusion@ Magna business centre. Fusion is one of four business centres in the Rotherham area run by Rotherham Investment & Development office (RiDO), the regeneration arm of RMBC;

“We had looked at a number of business centres around the Rotherham area, and at first when Fusion was mentioned I thought we’d never be able to afford anything like that. After meeting Julie, the centre manager, we were pleasantly surprised with the costs, the flexible licence arrangements and the rate-free offers for new businesses like ours.

“Fusion is an ideal location for us. Near to the motorway and with good road links around the area. It’s also great having the reception services, such as the onsite post collection and not having to worry about being around to sign for deliveries.

“Having a resident business advisor means that you don’t feel that you’re on your own, and there’s also a good spirit amongst the companies; we’re already working with two of the other businesses in the Centre. Finally the look and the quality at Fusion really help to give the right impression to our customers when they visit. I would advise anyone wishing to start a new business that you will not find better facilities in which to set up a small business.”
